A weekend of horror films, curated by director Steven Sheil, and a newly commissioned film made by The Culture Show's Michael Smith are among the highlights of a new programme of arts events announced recently by the Floating Cinema.
A wide-beamed 60-foot canal boat, which is still under construction, will be the venue for the programme, which has been devised by London-based artists Nina Pope and Karen Guthrie.
Following its successful introduction in 2011, which attracted 5,000 visitors and an online audience of 80,000, the Floating Cinema will launch on July 27 at the Open East Festival in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, beginning a waterborne series of events along London's rivers and canals that will run until September 30.
Entitled 'Extra-Ordinary' by the artists, the inspiration behind the events is to help people see the magical in the seemingly ordinary and will include on-board screenings, large-scale outdoor films for bank-side audiences, canal tours, talks and workshops.
Newly commissioned films by Oonagh Kearney and The Culture Show's Smith will debut as part of a programme that also includes a fancy dress screening of Tim Burton's Frankenweenie and an outdoor 'Horror Weekender', featuring Jack Arnold's classic chiller Creature from the Black Lagoon.
Experts from the Museum of London Archaeology will host a floating tour of London's burial grounds, while Professor Malcolm Burrows, from the University of Cambridge, will lead a tour exploring the microscopic creatures that dwell in the waterways of East London.
In a joint statement, Pope and Guthrie said: ?We wanted this year's programme to say that it's London's ordinary people that make its culture so extraordinary, and to spotlight some of those people and what they do in life, as well as to make sure they are at the heart of the programme as an active audience. The Extra-Ordinary theme offers a celebration of the overlooked and 'ordinary' in life, and brings to the fore the brilliance to be found on our doorstep."
