If you have a wildlife problem, one of the best things you can do is hire a company or individual trained and experienced in humane, effective ways to solve it. Unless it is an alligator or a rattlesnake, a surprising percentage of the population feels as though they are capable of handling animal removal on their own. A not-so-surprising percentage of these people find themselves in the emergency room later on, regretting their choice to handle the problem themselves. This is a scenario that requires a professional. Even a creature rarely thought of as "dangerous", such as a squirrel, can certainly cause harm if approached. Here are some questions you should ask any company you're thinking of hiring for the job.

Do you deal with insects?

Why would this be an important question to ask if you want a rodent taken out of your home? Well, it's because animal removal and pest control are two different disciplines with very little in common when it comes to best practices. Now, just because a company performs both tasks doesn't mean they can't separate the two disciplines as they should be, but it is something to consider. If a company's primary area of expertise is spraying poison and setting out ant traps, will they really be who you want to hire to humanely remove a gopher from the basement?

When are you available?

Do not hire an animal removal company that will be unavailable on the weekends (and there are plenty of these companies out there). If you have several creatures in or around the home, you don't want to wait for Monday if you spot one on Saturday. Getting a snake off the property may mean more than simply catching one reptile in a single afternoon. It may mean setting out traps and coming back to catch additional members of a family. Make sure the company you hire has a weekend response team so that you aren't left wondering who to call.

What are your methods?

Don't hire a company that advertises ethical methods of animal removal without pressing them on the subject. The words "ethical" and "humane" mean different things to different people. Will the creatures you want to get rid of be destroyed? You may be surprised to learn that killing an animal isn't necessarily considered inhumane by many trappers. In fact, the law may require destruction of the creature in certain instances. While the trapper may be right in telling you that killing the creature is the best method, you still have the right to know how the situation will be handled before you make your decision.
