Unlocked engine covers caused BA emergency landing - regulator

By Rhys Jones and Brenda Goh

LONDON (Reuters) - British air safety regulators ordered Airbus to notify operators of its A320 jets to make specific safety checks after finding unlocked engine covers had forced a jet to make an emergency landing at London's Heathrow airport last week.

An Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) report published on Friday said two coverings or cowls on the Airbus A319's engines were left unlatched after maintenance and this was not noticed before the aircraft departed.

All 75 passengers and five crew were unharmed after having been evacuated via the aircraft's emergency chutes following the Oslo-bound plane's emergency landing.

As a result of its investigation, the AAIB has formally requested Airbus notify operators of A320-family aircraft to check that the fan cowl doors are fully closed prior to flight by visually checking the position of the latches.

BA, whose own engineering team services its engines, said it would comply with the AAIB's recommendations. BA is owned by International Airlines Group.

"We are supporting the AAIB-led investigation and will follow its recommendations," Airbus said in a statement.

The AAIB said that prior to the BA incident there had been 32 reported fan cowl door detachment events by July 2012, 80 percent of which had occurred during takeoff.

The AAIB report said the fan doors from both engines of the BA jet detached during takeoff, puncturing a fuel pipe on the right engine and damaging the airframe and some aircraft systems. In turn this lead to a fire in the right engine on the approach to land.

It said fastening the fan cowl door latches usually required maintenance personnel to lie on the ground to reach the latches, and that the latches were difficult to see unless the person was crouching down.

BA's A319s are powered by two IAE V2500 engines made by the International Aero Engines consortium, part-owned by Pratt & Whitney parent UTC.

The AAIB said the BA plane's right engine was extensively fire damaged but the left engine continued to perform normally.

This contradicts findings made by America's National Transport Safety Board (NTSB), which on Thursday said the plane was forced to land after pilots shut down one engine, while the other caught fire.

Dell board recommends Michael Dell buyout offer

The board at Dell said that a takeover bid led the company's founder and CEO is in the best interest of shareholders at the slumping PC maker, and asked them to approve the deal when it's put to a vote in July.

The board unanimously recommended the offer from Michael Dell to take the company private for $24.4 billion, or $13.65 per share, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday.

The offer has been criticized by some prominent shareholders.

Billionaire investor Carl Icahn and Southeastern Asset Management, Dell's largest independent shareholder, pitched an alternative this month that would let Dell shareholders keep their stake in the company and give them either $12 per share in cash or additional shares.

A committee of Dell board members evaluating that offer has said that it needs more information.

Icahn and Southeastern own more than 12 percent of Dell shares combined, a total that trails only Michael Dell. They have said they will work to convince other Dell shareholders to reject the Michael Dell buyout.

Neither Icahn nor Southeastern immediately returned calls from The Associated Press early Friday.

Dell Inc. and other personal computer makers have seen sales crumble because of the growing popularity of smartphones and tablets. Michael Dell believes he can turn the company around by taking it private and diversifying into niches, such as business software, data storage and consulting.

The shareholder meeting will take place July 18 at the company's Round Rock, Texas, headquarters.

Shares of Dell slipped 2 cents to $13.25 Friday before markets opened.

Movie Review: 'Now You See Me' ? Plenty Up its Sleeve - Fairfax ...

Director Louis Leterrier (French director of The Incredible Hulk,?Clash of the Titans and?The Transporter) brings his unique flashy, big budget, art-house sensibility to this new release about a supergroup of illusionists called "The Four Horsemen" pulling off multiple heists as they get tracked by the FBI.?

While his hyper-colorized frenetic visual style demands and largely keeps the audiences' attention, it is the chemistry of the cast delivering the level of magnetism that creates such entertainment for the duration, making the audience feel every moment in the dark is well spent.?

While there are several flaws in Now You See Me, it is entertainment unique enough to suit anyone looking for something fresh and fun at the multiplex. ?
Each character is a modern magician who specializes in a different talent.?

Jesse Eisenberg is Atlas, a charismatic expert in sleight of hand, and Woody Harrelson is Merritt Osbourne, who is a mentalist with a waning career he is looking to reinvigorate. The two actors are back after working together on the crowd pleaser Zombieland, and clearly work exceedingly well with each other.?

Isla Fisher plays Henley, an escape artist extraordinaire. Her role was originally written for a man, but Fisher finds ways to develop her as a strong and fearless woman. She said she imagined a mix of Katharine Hepburn and Lisbeth Salander from Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

Dave Franco rounds out the Four Horsemen team as an expert pickpocket, and is the impressionable junior member looking to impress. It is how these four actors as these characters feed off each other and how they interact with Mark Ruffalo and French star Melanie Laurent (as the team of FBI agent Dylan Hobbs and Alma, the Interpol operative helping him), that makes the movie really worth seeing.

It is risky, genius casting. No one actor here would usually be thought of for a lead, but almost all have been, and three of them (Ruffalo, Harrelson and Eisenberg) have Oscar noms to their credit. They work so well together, they genuinely create an ensemble where all seem essential and of vital interest to the story's movement. That kind of generosity makes for great moments, and there are plenty to be had here.?

Now You See It also has two legends in juicy supporting roles. Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman and the characters they play make the proceedings all the more compelling, especially since Caine starred in several movies that inspired the writers for this one.

As to this sort of caper/magic mashup, it is a very interesting twist on a classic heist film, recalling movies like The Sting, Sleuth, Deathtrap?and Oceans Eleven, as well as that great '70s TV cult favorite, Banacek.

Since in Now You See Me there are multiple heists the audience is witness to, we get to puzzle out how each is done, while we experience a suspense building as to whether they will ultimately succeed. The audience grows to love the characters, even with all their quirks and weaknesses, and root for the Four Horsemen to get away with everything they are doing, right or wrong.?

The filmmakers' idea to use two cinematographers, Mitchell Amundsen for the action sequences, and Larry Fong for the illusions, was a choice that proved to be one of the film's two big weaknesses. While they each, in their way, create eye-popping sequences that the audience will hold in their memory far after the end titles roll, these two distinct designs seamed together feel disjointed and incongruous. Either one would have been great on their own, but the two become an embarrassment of riches that climbs over the top, challenging the visual continuity. ?

The other weakness is the plot, which, to be sure, has many twists and turns that are very enjoyable and unpredictable. It leaves, however, a few holes so big it requires the power of the cast's chemistry and the visual bombast to keep folks distracted, like a magician's sleight of hand.

It is accomplished, but when the smoke clears and the audience is walking away, a few unanswerable questions might be raised. No matter, the plot takes you to such fun and exciting places, and the cast carries you so nimbly and with such verve, you are happy to go wherever they lead you.?

Ta-da! Hollywood has dropped a great summer flick full of magic and excitement. Poof! That's the sound of your boredom disappearing into thin air. ?

Broadcom introduces low-power WiFi and Bluetooth chips for the Internet of things

The Internet of things -- that nebulous term usually associated with interconnecting everyday objects in a meaningful way -- is in the news again. Yesterday, Broadcom announced that it's launching a couple cost-effective, power-efficient wireless chips geared towards appliances, home automation and wearable devices. The first SoC, BCM4390, incorporates a highly-efficient WiFi radio for embedded use in products such as weight scales, thermostats and security cameras. It fits into the company's range of Wireless Internet Connectivity for Embedded Devices (WICED) chips. The second SoC, BCM20732, features an ultra low-power Bluetooth transceiver and targets devices like heart rate monitors, pedometers and door locks. Broadcom's also contributing its Bluetooth software stack to the Android Open Source Project with support for both standard and Bluetooth Smart hardware. Does this mean our long-awaited smart toaster's just around the corner? We sure hope so. Follow the source links below for more info.

Vatican bank chief's priority: clean up reputation

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The new head of the Vatican bank says his top priority is to clean up the bank's reputation, saying the institution hasn't served the pope well but provides valuable financial services to the Holy See and its clients that should continue.

Ernst von Freyberg was named president of the Institute for Religious Works (IOR) in February, replacing Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, an Italian banker ousted by the bank's board last May for incompetence and other failings.

Von Freyberg's appointment was part of the Vatican's efforts to shed the bank's image as a secretive tax haven and improve its reputation in global financial circles following a series of scandals, including a money-laundering investigation launched by Rome prosecutors in 2010.

In interviews published Friday, Von Freyberg said he had hired a leading firm, Promontory Financial Group, and the U.S.-based law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton to ensure that the bank complies with anti-money laundering and anti-terror financing standards. He also hired an outside public relations expert, saying a big part of the bank's problem was its failure to communicate.

"When I came here I thought I would need to focus on what is normally described as cleaning out and dealing with improper deposits," he told Vatican Radio. "There is - until now - nothing I can detect. That doesn't mean that there isn't anything, but it means that it is not our biggest issue.

"Our biggest issue is our reputation," he said.

Some of the sharpest calls for reform of the Vatican bureaucracy that accompanied the March election of Pope Francis focused on the bank and came from cardinals who suggested it needn't exist at all, given its shady reputation.

Von Freyberg, a 54-year-old German industrialist and aristocrat, said the bank's 18,900 customers choose to stay with the IOR because it provides "very, very safe" investment returns and other services such as asset management and wire transfers.

"They want us to be there," he said of the customers. But he acknowledged: "We haven't rendered a good service to the Holy Father with the reputation we have, and this reputation obscures the message. And that I consider my first and most important task to address."

Earlier this month, Von Freyberg announced the bank would publish its annual report online for the first time on Oct. 1.

In a parallel bid to show greater transparency, the Vatican's new financial watchdog agency published its own annual report last week, revealing that six suspect transactions had been reported in 2012, two of which were forwarded onto Vatican prosecutors for further investigation.

Von Freyburg said so far another seven suspicious transactions have been reported by the bank in 2013.

The IOR was founded in 1942 by Pope Pius XII to manage assets destined for religious or charitable works. Located in a tower just inside the gates of Vatican City, it also manages the pension system for the Vatican's thousands of employees.

The IOR on Friday provided preliminary figures for 2012, saying its net profit was 86.6 million euros ($112.6 million), with total assets under management of 7.1 billion euros ($9.23 billion).

It didn't provide figures for 2011, saying only its average net profit from 2009-2012 was 69 million euros ($89.7 million). The bump was due in large part to the performance of Italian government bonds last year.

The bank is not open to the public. Depositors are usually limited to Vatican employees, religious orders and diplomats accredited to the Holy See, though its customer base has long been the subject of speculation that Italians were hiding money there to avoid paying taxes. Currently, each account is being checked to ensure the owner belongs there.

As part of its transparency bid, the Vatican agreed to an independent evaluation process to ensure it was complying with international anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist financing norms. It passed the first evaluation of the Council of Europe's Moneyval process last summer, though it received poor or failing grades for its financial watchdog agency and the IOR, specifically the bank's ability to ensure that its customers and transactions were clean.

Von Freyberg has set a July 31 deadline to come up with norms for customer checks, after the bank missed its December deadline.

"We are late and I will do my utmost to catch up," he said in an email via his Munich-based spokesman Max Hohenberg of CNC Communications.

Von Freyberg, a member of the Roman Catholic charitable group Knights of Malta, was named IOR president after a months-long search by a headhunting firm ? a novelty for the Vatican where backroom deals, nepotism and patronage appointments are common.

His appointment initially raised eyebrows since he is also chairman of German shipbuilder Blohm + Voss. Von Freyberg chairs the company's civilian branch, but that unit is part of a consortium building four frigates for the German navy.

The Vatican and its bank have traditionally steered clear of investments in companies that manufacture weapons or contraceptives.
