Notes: Dallara takes off with U.S. military

And you thought Dallara only was an automobile constructor.

Well, the Italy-based company has a hand in the?Miniature Air Launched Decoy (MALD) project --?a low-cost, air-launched programmable craft that accurately duplicates the combat flight profiles and signatures of U.S. and allied aircraft.

Dallara?recently has worked with the Raytheon Company to develop a concept model that could lead to a quick-change electronic warfare payload. The concept is based on?the way IZOD?IndyCar Series front wing assemblies are changed.

According to program representatives, this quick-change nose will allow greater flexibility in selecting electronic warfare packages as needs arise, supporting their slogan?of ?our truck, your payload.?

After it is launched from its host transport aircraft, MALD flies a preprogrammed mission. And it's about as long as an IZOD?IndyCar Series car. The MALD-J is in production for delivery this year.

Dallara officials expect its Speedway, Ind., facility, which supports the new IZOD?IndyCar Series chassis program, to be fully functional by the end of March.

?We have to be ready for the start of the championship at the end of March, and this means being prepared to manufacture, repair and distribute spare parts for the cars, as well as providing technical support," said Stefano de Ponti, CEO of Dallara USA.
