EU pain: Unemployment at all-time high, inflation non-existent

By Robin Emmott and Martin Santa

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Unemployment has reached a new high in the euro zone and inflation remains well below the European Central Bank's target, underscoring just how severe a challenge EU leaders face to revive the bloc's sickly economy.

Joblessness in the 17-nation currency area rose to 12.2 percent in April, statistics agency Eurostat said on Friday, marking a new record since the data series began in 1995.

With the euro zone also in its longest recession since its creation in 1999, consumer price inflation was far below the ECB's target of just below 2 percent, coming in at 1.4 percent in May, slightly above April's 1.2 percent rate.

That rise may quieten concerns about deflation, but the deepening unemployment crisis is a threat to the social fabric of the euro zone, with almost two-thirds of young Greeks unable to find work exemplifying southern Europe's threat of creating a 'lost generation'.

Economists and policy makers have expressed concern that the greatest threat to the unity of the euro zone is now social breakdown from the crisis, rather than market-driven factors.

In France, Europe's second largest economy, the number of jobless rose to a record in April, while in Italy, the unemployment rate hit its highest level in at least 36 years, with 40 percent of young people out of work.

Some economists expect the ECB, which meets on June 6, to act to revive the economy and go beyond another interest rate cut to consider a U.S.-style money printing program known as quantitative easing.

"We do not expect a strong recovery in the euro zone," said Nick Matthews, a senior economist at Nomura International in London. "It puts pressure on the ECB to deliver even more conventional and non conventional measures."

In the past, the euro zone has needed economic growth of around 1.5 percent to create new jobs, according to Carsten Brzeski, an economist at ING. With the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development forecasting this week that the euro zone economy would contract by 0.6 percent this year, unemployment is set to worsen long before it turns around.

"We do not see a stabilization in unemployment before the middle of next year," said Frederik Ducrozet, an economist at Economist at Credit Agricole in Paris. "The picture in France is still deteriorating."

    5.6 MILLION YOUNG JOBLESS

ECB President Mario Draghi, whose bold decision-making helped protect the euro zone from break-up last year with a plan to buy the bonds of governments in trouble, has so far preferred to leave the onus on euro zone governments to reform.

A majority of economists polled by Reuters do not expect the ECB to cut its deposit or main refinancing rates in the coming months, although the OECD this week called for the bank to consider quantitative easing.

The Commission, the EU's executive, told governments this week they must focus on reforms to outdated labor and pension systems to regain Europe's lost business dynamism, a move to shift focus away from debilitating budget cuts towards growth.

EU leaders meeting at the end of June in Brussels are expected to put the problem of joblessness at the forefront of their summit.

European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, who chairs the meetings, said last week youth unemployment was one of the most pressing issues for the 27-nation European Union as a whole.

Ministers from France, Italy and Germany, meeting in Paris this week, called on their counterparts to help tackle youth unemployment, with German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble describing it as a "battle for Europe's unity".

In April, 5.6 million people under 25 were unemployed in the European Union, with 3.6 million of those in the euro zone.

Even if governments take on unions and vested interests to enact reforms, they will take time to produce benefits.

The impact of the euro zone's debt and banking crises has been sapping confidence from companies and households.

Private consumption saved Germany from slipping into recession in the first three months of this year, but retail sales still fell unexpectedly in April because of the cold European winter.

Meanwhile, French consumer spending dropped again in February, falling by 0.2 percent after contracting in January. French household purchasing power contracted in 2012 for the first time since 1984.

New bridge linking Europe and Asia embodies Turkey's rise

By Daren Butler and Evrim Ergin

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkey launched construction on Wednesday of a third bridge linking its European and Asian shores, the latest in a slew of multi-billion dollar projects that Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan sees as embodying its emergence as a major power.

Erdogan, who has led a decade-long transformation of a once crisis-prone economy into Europe's fastest growing, has prioritized the building frenzy as the nation's infrastructure struggles to keep up with its growth.

With an eye to an election cycle ending in parliamentary polls in 2015, Erdogan called on the Turkish, Italian and Korean firms involved to complete the Istanbul bridge within two years.

"This is how we are building a powerful Turkey," he told a crowd of several thousand people, some waving Turkish flags, who gathered at a construction site on the shores of the Bosphorus strait to the north of Europe's largest city.

"For the seven hills of Istanbul, we have seven grand projects, one is this bridge, a third necklace over the Bosphorus," he said of the $3 billion project, set to be the world's widest and longest combined road and rail bridge.

A huge 150 billion lira ($80 billion) is being invested in projects including a third Istanbul airport, billed to be one of the world's biggest, as well as rail and road tunnels under the Bosphorus, a high-speed train line to the capital Ankara and a shipping canal designed to rival Panama or Suez.

The bridge is meant to ease congestion in the city of 14 million people. Its population was less than 2.5 million when the first Bosphorus Bridge was opened to traffic in 1973.

With the population forecast to hit 17 million and the number of vehicles seen rising to 4.4 million from 3 million within a decade, the government is under pressure to act fast.

Environmental groups have said the highway and airport projects will cause significant damage, leading to the destruction of hundreds of thousands of trees and harming natural water basins, accusations rejected by Erdogan.

    OTTOMAN LEGACY

Wednesday's ceremony, timed to coincide with the 560th anniversary of Istanbul's conquest by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, harked back frequently to the Ottoman Empire, which crumbled to be replaced by modern Turkey 90 years ago.

Such references have become commonplace under Erdogan's rule as the country regains prominence across the Middle East, encouraging critics of the authoritarian prime minister to accuse him of behaving like a modern-day sultan.

Hundreds of military officers have been jailed on charges of plotting a coup against Erdogan; others including academics, journalists and politicians are facing trial on similar accusations.

Barred from running for prime minister again, Erdogan is widely expected to bid for a newly empowered presidency in an election next year, cementing his status as Turkey's most significant leader since Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of the modern secular republic.

Erdogan frequently embraces Istanbul's imperial past, when the Ottoman Empire sprawled across three continents.

"In all the lands where they were present, the Ottomans left behind creations which conquered the people's hearts. Just like our ancestors we are continuing to write history and leave behind creations," he said.

An Ottoman military band banged drums and smashed cymbals while Erdogan, President Abdullah Gul and their wives said a Muslim prayer before launching the project near the village of Garipce on the European side of the city.

The bridge will be named Yavuz Sultan Selim, commonly known in English as Selim the Grim, whose 16th century reign brought huge expansion in the Ottoman Empire and dominance across the Middle East.

    V3 Gaming Traverse

Balancing the potential performance of an elite gaming PC with the need to still afford things?like rent and car payments?the small form-factor V3 Gaming Traverse offers some impressive hardware in a small form-factor chassis. As mid-range gaming desktops go, the V3 Traverse does a great job of giving you plenty of bang for your buck.

    Design and Features
Looking at the V3 Traverse's case, a Prodigy small form-factor chassis from Bit Fenix, I just don't know what to think about this design. We've seen it before (on the AVADirect Mini Gaming PC Core i5 Z77) but I still can't figure out why this design is even being used. Is there something about improving airflow by putting it up off of the desk or floor? Is it about providing handles? Regardless, I personally think the roll-cage design looks (and feels) bizarre. And the handles and risers flex considerably whenever you pick up the tower or set it down, which feels pretty insecure.

Despite the shaky handles and risers, the tower has a fairly compact design, measuring 15.5 by 9.6 by 13.9 inches (HWD). The white and black color scheme is a nice change of pace from the usual black boxes festooned with glowing LED accents, but the stormtrooper look is getting a little tired as well?we've seen it on the iBuypower Revolt R770, the Digital Storm Bolt, not to mention the same-chassis doppelganger AVADirect Mini Gaming PC Core i5 Z77.

On the front of the tower is a tray-loading optical drive?a combination Blu-ray reader and DVD-writer in this configuration?and a handful of ports on the right-hand side of the tower front, with two audio jacks (for headphone out and microphone input) and two USB 3.0 ports. On the back of the tower you'll find far more connectivity options, like another six USB ports (two 3.0, four 2.0), Gigabit Ethernet, two HDMI outputs, a DisplayPort, three DVI outputs, along with S/PDIF digital audio and a handful of audio outputs. An internal 802.11n Wi-Fi connection gives you connectivity as well, for those times you don't want to snake an Ethernet cable to the back of the tower.

Open up the case, and you'll find the Traverse outfitted with a Zotac Z77ITX A-E Mini ITX motherboard. Our configuration included an Intel Core i5-3570K (normally 3.4GHz, but overclocked up to 4.6GHz), an Nvidia GeForce GTX 690 graphics card, which offers SLI-grade performance on a single card thanks to a dual-GPU design. A 600W Corsair power supply provides enough power for everything and even an upgrade or two, though there's not a lot of room for upgrades to be made?the PCI slots are filled, and the position of the motherboard in the compact tower makes it hard to access anything anyway. There are, however, two open drive bays, and an unused internal SATA port, so you can expand the storage in that way.

For storage you get both a 1TB, 7,200rpm hard drive and a 120GB Corsair Force GT solid-state drive (SSD). This combination provides both storage and speed, with plenty of capacity for games and media files, with zippy performance thanks to the SSD. The Windows 8 operating system is preinstalled, but there's no bloatware to speak of?there's nothing beyond GPU drivers included on the PC. V3 Gaming covers the Traverse with a generous three-year service warranty, with lifetime labor and tech support.

    Performance
V3 Gaming Traverse The V3 Traverse's quad-core CPU (a Core i5-3570K with 8GB of RAM) isn't the fastest processor out there, but it's definitely a top contender. With a Cinebench score of 7.88, it falls behind most of the Core i7-equipped systems?like the category leading Maingear Potenza Super Stock, which scored 9.57 points?but it still takes the lead in PCMark 7, scoring 6,572 points, topping both the Maingear Potenza (5,356) and the AVADirect Mini Gaming PC Core i5 Z77 (6,259). It fell slightly behind competitors in Handbrake and Photoshop, finishing the tests in 29 seconds (Handbrake) and 2 minutes 36 seconds (Photoshop CS6).

    V3 Gaming Traverse

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 690 is actually a single-card SLI, the equivalent of two GTX 680s, with 4GB of dedicated memory. As such, it offered some of the best graphics performance we've seen in this price range. It cranked through our gaming tests with competition-crushing scores, leading in Alien vs. Predator with 308 frames per second at 1,366-by-768 and 98 fps at 1920-by-1080 and high detail settings. Similarly, it produced top results in Heaven (232 fps at 1366-by-768 and 107 at 1920-by-1080 and high detail settings).

While the chassis design might leave me scratching my head, there's no denying that V3 Gaming has built a solid gaming PC in this small form-factor case. With an overclocked Core i5 and Nvidia's single-card SLI graphics processing, the V3 Gaming Traverse offers a level of performance that belies the PC's mid-range price tag. If you want to experience elite gaming without the $5,000-$7,000 price tag, the V3 Gaming Traverse is a smart pick, provided you don't have your heart set on easy maintenance and upgrades.

It will take just four seconds to watch this knockout

Do you have four seconds to watch an amateur knockout? That's all it took for Garrett Whitman to win in an amateur bout in California over the weekend. He took less time than a sneeze to knock out McKlaine McKinnon at Get Down Promotions. It's hard to judge a fighter's potential off of amateur fights, but Whitman has two wins totaling 49 seconds of fighting. It's an impressive start to his MMA career.

The Retrofuture of Outdoor Advertising Was Even Worse Than What We Got

Outdoor advertising is at least 5,000 years old (the ancient Egyptians used to hang papyrus notices advertising rewards for runaway slaves), and fears about how invasive it could be have been around nearly as long. For every glitzy video billboard you curse at today, know that your forbearers dreamed up much, much worse.

A rally that brought the?stock?market to record highs this year came back to life after U.S. home prices rose the most in seven years and consumer confidence reached a five-year high. Asstock?prices rose investors sold bonds, sending interest rates higher.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 106 points to close at another record Tuesday, bouncing back from a loss the week before. The Standard & Poor's 500 index also gained. The S&P is on track for its seventh straight monthly gain, the longest winning streak since 2009.

"They say the?stock?market tends to lead the economy. Now we're starting to see the improvement on the economic front, so there's some justification for this rally," said Ryan Detrick, a senior technical strategist at Schaeffer's investment research.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note jumped to 2.17 percent, its highest level since April 2012, as investors moved money out of safe assets and into riskier ones like?stocks. That's a big jump from Friday's level of 2.01 percent. Markets were closed Monday for Memorial Day.?

The Dow closed 106.29 points, or 0.7 percent, higher at 15,409.39. The index has risen for 20 straight Tuesdays. The longest streak of consecutive gains for any day of the week was sent in 1968, when there were 24 gains on Wednesdays, according to Schaeffer's Investment Research.

The S&P 500 index rose 10.46 points, or 0.6 percent, to 1,660.06. The Nasdaq composite index climbed 29.74 points, or 0.9 percent, to 3,488.89.

The?stock?market is coming off a rare loss last week, when both the Dow and the S&P 500 index had their first losing weeks in a month. Investors worried that the Federal Reserve might slow its extraordinary economic stimulus measures, which have also supported the?stockmarket's advance.

Part of the reason for the increase in bond yields is anticipation that the Fed may ease back on its $85 billion a month in bond purchases. Tim Courtney, chief investment officer at Exencial Wealth Advisors, is among those who see a bleak outlook for the bond market. Rising inflation will eventually lead to higher interest rates, Courtney said, and losses for bond investors.

"The only way that bonds can make money from here is if we go a prolonged period of time with very, very low inflation and rates just don't move up a whole lot at all," said Courtney. "Under any other scenario they lose."

The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller survey, which was released beforestock?trading opened, found that U.S. home prices rose 10.9 percent in March, the most since April 2006. A growing number of buyers are bidding on a tight supply of homes. Beazer Homes jumped 63 cents, or 3 percent, to $21.96.

Stocks?extended their gains in the morning after the Conference Board reported at 10 a.m. that its measure of consumer confidence rose in May to its highest level since February 2008.

The Dow was up as much as 218 in the early going, then gave up some of its gain in the afternoon.

Some analysts judged that investors were booking gains with the end of the month approaching on Friday. The Dow is up 3.8 percent so far in May. The S&P 500 is 3.9 percent higher.

"It's the end of the month," said Quincy Krosby, a market strategist at Prudential Financial. "If you've been long and you'd done very well you want to lock in those gains."

The gains were broad. Eight of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 index rose, led by financial?stocks. The only ones that fell were utilities and telecommunication?stocks, which investors tend to buy when they're seeking stable, safe?stocks?that pay high dividends. All but six of the 30?stocks?in the Dow rose.

The Dow has advanced 17.6 percent this year and the S&P 500 index is 16.4 percent higher as investors have piled into?stocks.

Unlike the first three months of the year, when the biggest gains were in large, stable companies like consumer staple makers that pay big dividends, in recent weeks investors have been bidding up the?stocksof companies that have more to gain if the economy strengths. That shift out of lower-risk?stocks?and into more "cyclical"?stocks, like banks and industrial companies, means investors are becoming more aggressive in seeking returns and more comfortable taking on risk.

Another bullish signal for the market is the strong growth in small-company?stocks. Those?stocks?have a greater potential for appreciation but also tend to carry greater risk than large, diversified companies. The preference for small?stocks?was on display again Tuesday as the Russell 2000 index of small-company?stocks?rose 1.3 percent, more than other market indexes, to 997 points, a gain of 13 points. Its year-to-date increase of 17.4 percent is 1 percentage point greater than that of the S&P 500.

    Among other?stocks?making big moves:

?Tiffany rose $3.01, or 3.9 percent, to $79.22 after the high-end jewelry seller said its first quarter net income rose 3 percent as sales improved across all regions. The results beat the forecasts of Wall Street analysts.

?Tesla Motors jumped $13.25, or 13.7 percent, to $110.33. Last week the electric car maker raised almost $1 billion from a bond and?stockoffering and paid off a government loan nine years early. The company is also set to announce this week that it's adding to a network of car charging stations.

?Railway operator CSX fell 20 cents, or 0.8 percent, to $25.30 after one of its freight trains derailed in a Baltimore suburb.

?Electricity company FirstEnergy dropped 6.5 percent, or $2.76, to $39.86 after Credit Suisse stripped the company of its "outperform" rating, saying that a glut of energy would push down prices the company is able to charge.

In commodities trading, the price of oil rose 86 cents, or 0.9 percent, to $95.01. Gold fell $7.70, or 0.6 percent, to $1,378.90 an ounce. The dollar gained against the euro and the Japanese yen.

Abortion doctor's wife: I'm sorry for trusting him

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? The wife of a Philadelphia abortion doctor, a cosmetologist who admitted helping him perform very late-term abortions at his corrupt, grimy clinic, said Wednesday that she was sorry for trusting her husband and was sentenced seven to 23 months in prison.

Pearl Gosnell had pleaded guilty to racketeering and performing an illegal abortion past Pennsylvania's 24-week limit. She said her husband, Kermit, told her the abortions were all performed within the legal limit and she believed him. He was convicted this month of first-degree murder in the deaths of three infants born alive.

"I am the wife of Kermit Gosnell, I am not happy about that now and I haven't been for a long time," Pearl Gosnell, 51, told Common Pleas Judge Benjamin Lerner at her sentencing hearing.

She said her husband took the "cowardly" path for not speaking at his trial or apologizing for his crimes.

The judge gave her time credit for nearly three months she spent in jail after her arrest.

Former employees testified that Kermit Gosnell routinely performed illegal abortions past the 24-week limit; delivered babies who were still moving, whimpering or breathing; and dispatched the newborns by "snipping" their spines, as he referred to it.

Gosnell was also convicted in the death of patient Karnamaya Mongar, who was given a fatal overdose of painkillers.

The case became a flashpoint in the nation's polarized abortion debate. Foes said it exposed the true nature of abortion in all its disturbing detail. Abortion rights activists warned that Gosnell's practice foreshadows what women could face if abortion is driven underground with more restrictive laws.

A former clinic employee, who pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and other charges, was sentenced Wednesday to time served after being jailed for 28 months.

Adrienne Moton, 36, had pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and other charges. Lerner said he was sending Moton home and she has shown remorse for her crimes.

In an emotionally wrought statement, Moton told the court she thought she was helping women but never thought about the babies at Gosnell's clinic.

The judge rescheduled the sentencing dates for clinic workers Lynda Williams, 43; Sherry West, 53; and Tina Baldwin, 47, because the women still have unresolved federal drug charges.

West and Baldwin are now scheduled to be sentenced June 24. Williams is due in court July 1.

News Flash: PPC Is Inbound Marketing - WordStream

The industry is all a-buzz today with Rand Fishkin?s announcement that SEOmoz is relaunching and rebranding as simply Moz. They are distancing themselves from their history as an SEO company and positioning themselves as a provider of more general marketing tools, with a focus on ?inbound marketing,? the phrase that local Boston company HubSpot and others made (relatively) famous.

I couldn?t help but notice that Rand?s blog post explaining the change included a revision of a diagram he had previously used when discussing inbound marketing. Here?s the new diagram, which distinguishes between inbound marketing and ?interruption marketing?:

    What is Inbound Marketing?

And here?s the old diagram, from Rand?s March 2011 blog post:

    Inbound Marketing vs. Outbound Marketing

Notice anything missing? That?s right, brainiacs, PPC is mysteriously missing! In the new diagram, PPC is right next to SEO, at the top of the list - where I think it belongs! So what changed?

What (TF) Is Inbound Marketing, Anyway?

Earlier this year, there was a long thread at Inbound.org, started by our own Victor Pan, who petitioned for a PPC category on the site. Tad Chef responded by saying that ?buying ads is outbound?:

    Inbound Marketing Definition

Ian Howells echoed this idea, saying: ?Not that I hate on paid search, but erm? the site is called inbound.org. PPC is paid media, which is the polar opposite.?

Martin McDonald then followed up on the topic in a post called ?WTF is Inbound Marketing, Anyway?? at his blog, which drew another long chain of comments. Martin disagreed with both Tad and Ian:

Now frankly, I?m in disagreement with both of the above. PPC is absolutely a part of inbound marketing by my standards.?My definition of inbound revolves around being somewhere with the answer when someone is looking for it, NOT sticking an advert for a product or service in front of their faces. That absolutely includes PPC!

This sparked another thread at Inbound.org, with people continuing to debate whether PPC, being a form of paid media, qualifies as inbound marketing.

Is PPC included in Inbound Marketing?

The answer, as Ed Fry points out, really depends on how you define inbound marketing. Is it about cost of distribution, or context?

Free vs. Paid, Interruption vs. Flow

Some people in the web marketing space have suggested that PPC shouldn?t be included in ?inbound marketing? because you have to pay for placement. But this doesn?t make any sense.

The whole point of introducing a term like ?inbound marketing? is to create a more nuanced distinction than just ?free marketing? and ?paid marketing.? Any marketer who manages a budget knows that no form of marketing is truly ?free.? HubSpot, one of the first proponents of inbound marketing, sells a product that helps you do it ? how is that free? They know that if they called what they?re selling ? a platform for blogging and SEO ? ?free marketing,? it would? be a contradiction in terms. Of course, you can do inbound marketing without HubSpot (duh), but you?re either going to be paying someone or a team of people to do it (a blogger, a social media manager, an SEO specialist, etc.) or you?re going to be doing it yourself, as the business owner, and any time you spend on inbound marketing is time you can?t spend on other business activities, so all those activities have a cost. That?s why ?free marketing? doesn?t cut it.

It makes much more sense to think of ?inbound marketing? as the opposite of ?outbound marketing,? or ?interruption marketing,? than as the opposite of ?free marketing? (which doesn?t exist). By this definition, inbound marketing is any kind of marketing that reaches customers when they go looking for something to buy.

For example: if you own a local pizza joint and you go around stick fliers and menus under people?s windshield wipers and rubber-banding them to their doorknobs all the time, that?s outbound or interruption marketing, because you?re coming to them and getting in their face, even though you have no idea whether they want pizza or even like pizza.

But if someone in your area searches for ?pizza? on their mobile phone at 5 pm, and they get an organic local listing or a mobile PPC ad from your businesses, that?s contextual. Neither option is interrupting the flow of what they?re doing. Either way, you?re giving them information they were already looking for. Because PPC, like SEO, is contextual and query-triggered, it?s inbound marketing. Clearly, Rand and the Moz team realized this sometime in the past couple of years, and that?s part of why they?re changing their position.

    Is Paid Media Sustainable?

Hubspot, who helped create and popularize the inbound marketing buzzword, has long argued that PPC is a marketing addiction. At the 2012 HubSpot user conference in Boston, Mark Roberge, a senior HubSpot executive, gave a talk where he claimed that paid search is not sustainable. Here?s a photo from that event!

is Paid Search Considered Inbound Marketing?

I won?t reiterate the irony of HubSpot being a paid product. But I will repeat that all media is paid media. SEO requires tremendous effort. Thousands of new websites are launched every day, but the first page of the search results isn?t getting any bigger. In fact, if we look at the trends in mobile search, if anything, the SERP is getting smaller! That means the competition to get on the first page of Google is getting exponentially greater all the time.

And of course Hubspot knows this. After all, we?ve even done joint webinars together on how to leverage PPC. And they spend 10?s of thousands of dollars per month on PPC advertising to generate leads in a cost effective and scalable way, according to tools like SpyFu and SEMRush:

Hubspot says Paid Search isn't inbound marketing and should be avoided yet they do a lot of paid search

Ian Lurie pointed out recently, SEO is a zero-sum game. There?s only room for 10 organic listings on the first page (if you?re lucky). And if someone else takes those spots, that means you can?t! If you think it?s going to be easy to compete with bigger businesses who have been doing it longer, you?re crazy. And you?re even crazier if you think SEO is free.

I?m glad that more marketers including Rand Fishkin and I realize that PPC is inbound marketing, it is sustainable, and it does work.

Are you on board yet? And if not, why not?

NASA Aqua: Finding More than Faces in the Clouds

Even schoolchildren understand the basics of the water cycle?ocean water evaporates into clouds, rains down over land, and flows back into the sea?but in our era of rapidly changing weather, just knowing the basics doesn't cut it. To figure out how the water cycle operates on a global scale and how its variations affect life on this planet, NASA relies on the Aqua satellite.

Aqua is the second satellite in the Earth Observing System (EOS), a major international scientific research mission. Preceded by the Terra satellite in 1999 and followed by the Aurora satellite in 2004, the Aqua launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base aboard a Delta II rocket in May of 2002. The Aqua flies a globe-spanning polar orbit at the head of the Afternoon Constellation group of satellites, also known as the A-Train, and covers the breadth of the planet every 16 days.

NASA Aqua: Finding More than Faces in the Clouds

During the Aqua's two week revolution, it tracks, measures, and quantifies virtually every aspect of the water cycle in acute detail?whether that water is liquid, vapor, or ice. It sees everything from the rate of oceanic evaporation to the relative reserves of land and sea ice to surface temperatures and soil moisture. In addition, the Aqua is outfitted with the capability to measure radiative energy fluxes, atmospheric aerosols, vegetative cover on land and phytoplankton populations in the ocean.

The satellite employs a group of six observational instruments from a variety of international sponsors to produce the system's approximately 89GB of daily data. The Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer?Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) from JAXA measures precipitation rate, water vapor, surface moisture content, sea ice and snow extent, the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder NASA Atmospheric temperature and humidity, land and sea surface temperatures, cloud, radioactive energy spikes; the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU) and Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) also from NASA measures atmospheric temperature and humidity as well as radiative energy. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) by Raytheon provides further broadband survey capabilities both over land and the sea. And the Humidity Sounder for Brazil (HSB) measures the humidity. In Brazil.

Twice a day, the Aqua will download its data trove via a secure S-band link to a ground station located in Svalbard and Alaska. These ground stations then relay the data to the Goddard Space Flight Center. And while the Aqua mission was only slated for six years of service originally, the craft has been performing nearly flawlessly for more than a decade and is expected to remain active until at least early next decade.

It was fantastic, and he is brilliant at his work, he knows exactly what he is doing. Niel was very friendly, and he understand what kind of cut exactly I am looking for. Usually when I go work, I had to spent 10min fighting with my hair but now I only need to spent "a" minute with my hair. It's an amazing experience, and I'd definitely go again.?

Twitter for iOS and Android updated with tweet preview, easier photo sharing

Twitter for iOS updated with tweet preview and expanded timelines

There doesn't seem to be much broken that needs fixing on Twitter for iOS or Android, for that matter. Which is why the latest update to hit the App Store and Google Play deals mostly in minor UI tweaks. Now, Twitaholics that bump up the Twitter app on both mobile platforms will enjoy a cleaner compose look that lets users preview outgoing tweets (including full sized photos), tag locations and quickly share photos from their gallery. On the iOS end, notifications have been added for when your friends newly sign-up for the service, as well as an expanded timeline view that does away with borders. While Android users now have access to more detailed information from the notification tray. Naturally, there are the requisite, unspecified bug fixes bundled into the software bump, but that bit's unglamorous and (thankfully) left devoid of detail. That's right, it's nothing to get hot and bothered over folks -- just a minor facelift to further enable your oversharing.

Resident Evil: Revelations tops UK Chart ? Gaming news

Capcom?s survival-horror video game Resident Evil: Revelations has resurfaced to top spot in the UK charts following the recent release of its console port.

The game, also known as Biohazard Revelations, was originally released for the 3DS in the first quarter of 2012.

However, an Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U and PC version of the game was recently released, which pushed the game to the top spot on the UK Chart.

The production and development team behind the Resident Evil franchise will surely be feeling a bit relaxed after a long time, as the survival-horror series has not been getting a positive feedback from the fans since a long time now.

With the second title in the Resident Evil franchise raising the bar too high, the subsequent titles failed to live up to the expectations of the fans and therefore the series began to rapidly lose its popularity.

The release of Resident Evil 6 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the final quarter of 2012 failed to give the brand the much-needed lift, thus adding to the troubles of the publisher and developer.

However, a strong position on the UK Chart will definitely give the company its confidence back and give it the motivation and encouragement to keep working on delivering what the fans expect from it.

Judging from the negative reaction and complaints that the company had to cope with over the last few years, they would surely feel much better now that they know that respect for the Resident Evil franchise still exists out there.

While Resident Evil: Revelations topped the UK Chart, FIFA 13 saw an improvement in its position, moving to the No. 2 spot.

Sitting on top last week, Metro: Last Light dropped down to third place this week, while Dead Island: Riptide sat at fourth.

The fifth spot was occupied by Donkey Kong Country Returns for the 3DS, whereas Assassin?s Creed III continued to maintain its place in the top 10 on the UK Chart, sitting on the sixth spot.

Tomb Raider and Far Cry 3 sat on the seventh and eighth place on the UK Charts, whereas Luigi?s Mansion 2 occupied the ninth spot.

Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins rounded out the Top 10 this week.

    Zimbabwe honors deputy intelligence chief

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) ? The Zimbabwe prime minister's party said it stayed away from a state funeral Monday for an intelligence officer because he had been convicted by a court of attempted murder.

Elias Kanengoni, deputy director of the Central Intelligence Organization, died Wednesday after collapsing at his country home. He was 60.

He was buried Monday with full military honors at Heroes' Acre, a shrine for politicians and fallen former guerrillas in the bush war that led to independence in 1980.

Kanegoni, an ex-guerrilla, and an associate were sentenced to seven years in jail for repeatedly shooting an opposition politician during an election campaign in 1990. They were freed on an immediate pardon from President Robert Mugabe.

The politician survived severe groin injuries and was a lawmaker in the prime minister's party before his death in 2009.

"We don't recognize his status as a hero at all," said Douglas Mwonzora, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's party spokesman.

The heroes' shrine was meant be the resting place for defenders of people's rights and not for "hired assassins" with a history of violence, he said.

Patrick Kombayi, a former stalwart in Mugabe's party, helped found the opposition Zimbabwe Unity Movement before he was shot in the central town of Gweru.

He was wounded by seven pistol shots into his groin and abdomen and underwent genital surgery in Britain afterward.

Kombayi, elected a senator in Tsvangirai's party, had become prominent in business and served as the mayor of Gweru, where he owned the main downtown hotel.

After his 2009 death, his family mounted a permanent photographic exhibition in the hotel depicting his activism against colonial-era rule and his burgeoning opposition to Mugabe's increasingly authoritarian rule.

In a brief statement Monday, family members said they recalled Kombayi's "horrific gunshot wounds" that left him to endure years of physical pain.

Kanengoni was now honored for "protecting Mugabe's interests. What can we do as a family? Nothing. It is the system which is wrong," the statement said.

Mugabe's vice president Joice Mujuru told mourners at Heroes' Acre outside Harare on Monday that the spy chief's death left "a deep void" in the nation's intelligence service that fought against internal subversion and outside political interference.

She described him as "a dedicated freedom fighter who sacrificed life and limb to change the course of history and ensure the country remains secure."
